Hey Fuseletter community,
Excited to share this one with you…
Andrew McLuhan is many things: a writer, dad, maple syrup farmer, and the grandson of Marshall McLuhan, the 20th century futurist on all things media and technology (The same guy who predicted Twitter and TV stars becoming president back in the 1960s).
I’ve been a long time fan of Marshall McLuhan’s work. When I started writing the upcoming book on media and the metaverse, I found myself looking at sentences I wrote, shaking my head, and saying, “Marshall already said that 50 years ago, but way better.”
It still amazes me that Andrew answered my email when I reached out to connect. After all, I’m just some random guy from Columbus, OH. It amazes me more that he agreed to write the foreword to the new book. And it amazes me the most that we’ve become good friends with a surprisingly lot in common. I’m grateful for his unexpected presence in my creative journey.
Andrew spends much of his time directing The McLuhan Institute which works to teach and preserve Marshall’s way of thinking when it comes to culture & technology. That collection of books behind him during our interview? That’s actually Marshall’s personal archive 🤯. He’s also creating some amazing resources on Substack worth following.
We discuss what we can do as professionals, parents, and cultural participants to promote smarter media regulation and literacy, carefully unpacking Marshall’s classic phrase, “The Medium is the Message.”
